Karen Rossi,
creator of Fanciful Flights,
is a storyteller in metal who creates whimsical sculptures: flying
shoppers, orange-haired angels, mermaids
with pearls, family trees, picture
frames, saloons, menorahs
and desk accessories.
The playfulness of her sculptures make people feel playful as well.
The quality is welcomed not only by
the individuals, but by corporations and hospitals who commissioned
her art. Connecticut has made Karen Rossi their first
artist-in-residence. Karen's Fanciful Flights art is purchased by
art lovers across the world.
About Karen Rossi
Rossi grew up in a family that owns
and operates a welding business that catered to the aerospace and
medical industries. Although she was imbued with her parents'
passion for metal, she had no affinity working to that degree of
precision. After college, she studied at the Brookfield Arts Center,
the Parsons School of Design, and the Penland School of Crafts.
Then, secretly, she learned the craft of welding from a retired
welder and created her first work - a detailed sculpture of a trout.
Her parents were delighted with this new direction for the family's
dedication to metal craft and they have since been the foremost fans
of Karen's work.
Rossi's Fanciful Flight studio is an
old mill building that stands between a 19th-centuary canal and the
Connecticut River. In summer, the studio, with a huge open
loading-deck area, hums with the noises of the birds and boats on
the river as well as the year-round interior activity, as Karen, her
assistants, and young high-school trainees work among welding tools,
newly painted pieces, and design areas.
